Kal Penn, who got his big break in the Harold and Kumar franchise over two decades ago, was also in attendance. “I stand on the shoulders of a lot of people who came before me, especially in the South Asian community. If you turned on the TV even 10 years ago, the difference [to now] is night and day. You had to be white or Black to get an audition. There was a lot of racism back in the day,” said Penn, wearing a vintage tux with a kurta. “But the brightest producers and directors I had the chance to work with were the ones that wanted to cast against type. In the early 2000s, that meant something. There’s a lot more of that today.”

As the night unfolded, Simu Liu accepted the Gold Mogul honor and Charles Melton received the Gold Artistic Achievement trophy for his acclaimed work in May December and Beef. Melton landed his coveted role in Beef season 2 after meeting director Lee Sung Jin at a Gold House dinner in 2024. “It’s crazy, right? It just reflects how strong this community of artists is,” Melton told Vogue. “And it shows that us being together as a community in the same room is important and has a lot of power. It’s transcendent. I’m really proud to be Korean-American.”

Chrissy Teigen, in a custom Aiste Hong black gown with a voluminous mint-hued bubble hem, took to the stage to give a shout out to Justin Pichetrungsi. The James Beard Award-winning chef behind Anajak Thai restaurant in Los Angeles oversaw this year’s gala dinner. “We have been Anajak lovers for so long,” Teigen told Vogue after finishing her meal. “Justin’s food reminds me of home and my mom. Flavor-wise, it’s the closest I have ever had to my mom’s cooking. It even exceeds that with the fried chicken.” Beside her, her husband John Legend added: “He’s like family to us.”

The celebrations continued on with an after-party that raged past midnight. Inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, guests sipped on Hennessy XO cocktails and hit the dance floor while Yang participated in a competitive game of mahjong. There was also a spirited karaoke room where Oscar-winning filmmaker Maggie Kang joined actors Ross Butler and Saagar Shaikh to belt out Linkin Park’s In the End. Near the bar, Liu chatted with The Pitt’s Ken Kirby and Manny Jacinto.“The Gold Gala is always wild. There’s no event like this,” said Jacinto in a NB44 suit by Nicolas Bijan. “You get to see a lot of friends and people you have worked with in the past. It’s very uplifting and inspiring and always really fun.”
